My Dog Locked Me In My Basement

I don’t typically have little adventures in my home, but this week there has been one to note.

So this really happened – my dog locked me out of my bedroom twice. I used a credit card both times. Never done that before. It actually worked. I felt very Richard Dean Anderson.

Fast forward a few days … my dog locks me in my basement. I had no shoes, no cell phone and no credit card. I had to be resourceful. Luckily my husband had decided to knock down a few walls in the room above my lower level stairs a couple of months back (reno hopes and dreams, you know). But I still had to get high enough to reach that level.

The small opening that was my only chance at escape.

Throw-Back-Monday: Yes, I Drove Through The Ocean. (guest post)

This is a great post submitted by Ms. Politico. Thank you for sharing!

Tybee Island is a beautiful little island  about 20 minutes from Savannah Georgia. My family would visit Tybee fairly often throughout my high school  years to see family, and it is still one of my favorite places to visit today.

If you’ve ever been to Tybee, you know there is one road that takes you out to the island from Savannah. For a large part of that drive, it’s just a two lane highway.  It’s a fun little trip as you’re surrounded by marsh and ocean on both sides as you make your way out to the island. If you’re a nature lover, it’s definitely a scene you can appreciate.

One time  while my family was staying at a beach house out on Tybee,  my sister and I had to run some errands and get some supplies. There  weren’t a lot of shopping options on Tybee at the time, so we headed to the nearest Wal-Mart on a nearby island. However, we left during a fairly substantial rainstorm. I don’t think either of us thought anything of it, at least not at first.

After leaving the beach house, we made a couple of turns and were again on the main road that would take us back toward the city. Little did we know that not only would we be driving with the rainstorm, in the dark, but also during high tide. That wouldn’t normally seem like too big of a deal, except the road to Tybee Island was actually quite low in some areas…as in when it was high tide, the water would be just a little bit below the level of the road ( or so it seemed). The result was the scariest ride of my life.

My sister was driving and I was the passenger. We were making our way slowly down the main road, but the rain was coming down extremely hard. Suddenly, I heard my sister exclaim, ” I can’t see anything! I can’t even see the road!”. Not exactly what you want to hear as a passenger. I was looking out the windows of the car, basically just trying to find the edge so I could help direct her to at least stay on the road. Unfortunately, I didn’t see road. I literally just saw water.

This is when my heart began to beat a little faster. I couldn’t believe it. There was seriously NO ROAD! Did I mention that my sister drove a small, extremely lightweight vehicle that could easily have been washed away? I was, to say the least, nervous.  After a little while of driving in horrible conditions, we came upon a clearing, where you could just make out the ocean in the moonlight that had crept in, except the ocean didn’t stop at the road, it overran the road! We were actually driving IN the ocean!

Driving In The Ocean

Driving through ocean. Ain’t no thang.

At any moment, it seemed like we would just float out to sea. My mind start going a mile a minute. My survival skills were kicking into gear. If we do get washed away, at what point do we try to open the car doors? We wait until the car fills with water then do it, right? Or is it better to just jump out of the car? Somehow, while I was planning our escape, my sister managed to navigate the road, or lack thereof, and get us to higher ground.

I couldn’t believe it! We made it! I still don’t know how she did it, but props to my sister for keeping us alive.  Needless to say, we made it to our destination, the rain died down, and it was a MUCH better trip on the way back to the beach house.

It was bizarre, scary, and one of the coolest experiences at the same time. I mean, who else can say they’ve driven in the ocean?

Becoming A Whiskey Connoisseur AND The Stanley Hotel

What is the one thing I’ve always wanted to do in Colorado? Stay at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park.

Stanley Hotel

You bet I’m ready for this.

In case you have been raised in a dark age, The Stanley is the famous hotel at which Stephen King stayed and his experiences inspired him to write The Shining. So it’s basically The Shining Hotel. Continue reading

Throw-Back-Monday: Snow Days

This throw-back goes out to my Northern friends. I know you might be a bit tired of that precious white powder that is blanketing your landscape, but I want to remind you how lucky you are.

I’m jealous. I miss snow. I miss it a lot. I don’t miss shoveling it in May, but this time of year just isn’t the same without sub-zero wind chills and  a large white canvas calling my name. You really haven’t lived if you haven’t played in snow.

My siblings and I would build snow forts for our snowball fights (snowballs we’d spritz with water so they were rock hard – the only way to have a REAL snowball fight). I think one of my sisters may have been devious enough to put rocks in some of them as well. We were hardcore. Continue reading

A Road Less Traveled: The Maker’s Mark Distillery!

I have driven from Georgia to northern Indiana about 152 million times. Like most of you driving from point A to B, I try to find the most efficient route, the shortest distance and the highest highway speeds. I have a purpose and it is scheduled. I’ve done the drive so many times that I actually compete with myself by trying to beat my best time. This means I make quicker and fewer stops and that I steadily increase my cruise control as I get behind that guy going 90 feeling confident he’ll get nailed by the cop behind the billboard before I do.

I no longer look at the horses in their pastures. I no longer appreciate the bluegrass in Kentucky or the mountains in Tennessee. I drive by the Corvette Museum, which is one of the coolest architectural structures around, and I just check it off as, yep, I’ve hit Bowling Green. I count mile markers and exit signs while I get annoyed with the slowest driver EVER in the LEFT LANE (I know you all feel me on that one).

Returning from my last trip home I decided I was going to change things up a bit. I had recently decided I want to become a whiskey connoisseur (I’ll post about that later). 95% of the world’s bourbon is produced in Kentucky. I drive right by the Bourbon Trail every time I do this trip. Of course I drive by a million other places and things I never see because I don’t take the time to stop and check them out. We all do this. Why? What’s so wrong about getting in an hour or two later than you had previously planned? Why does everything have to be so rushed and scheduled?

Spontaneity kicked in and I was getting off the highway. I made an executive decision. I was going to see the Maker’s Mark distillery.  There’s a sign saying that Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark are sitting right off of I-65. Seriously. And I’d never toured a distillery before. Here I come.  Continue reading

Total-Take-Back: Happy New Year! (but not really)

Happy New Year!!! I hope 2014 treats you well. Though the new year is always a nice clean slate, there was one January 1st I wouldn’t mind forgetting.

My brother, younger sister and I were noshing on typical holiday treats at my folks. Summer sausage was a family favorite and we had enjoyed it just the week before. And maybe it sat out for an hour or two … or a few before being put away.

Food poisoning

Not A Happy New Year

It started with me. New Year’s Eve. 10 PM. I threw up (I know reading my blog it seems like I do that a lot). I had a fever and the sweats (and every other horrid thing that can shoot out of your body), too. It felt like I had been hit by the plague. We chalked it up to the flu at first. Two hours later, my brother goes down. Same symptoms. We were running in and out of the bathroom like mad men. An hour or two after that, it consumed my little sister who ended up sleeping next to the toilet on the bathroom floor.

We had contracted the WORST case of food poisoning I had ever had. It felt like death. In fact I called my then boyfriend Clifford in Atlanta crying on my bed, clutching my stomach as I bid him a final farewell. I knew I was goner and I was going to leave him my TV.

Miraculously, I did survive, as did we all, but it was hardly the way to kick off a new year.  The worst holiday experience ever!!!

Throw-Back-Monday: How Risk Got Banned From My Parents’ House

Celebrating the holidays with family this last week has reminded me of a Christmas we shared several years ago.

My big sis gave me one of the best gifts one could receive: the game of RISK. Who could imagine a better way to spend six hours of their day? A game of strategy, venture, and chance? Sieges, allies, and DICE? (because dice make everything cooler)

Best game ever! What could go wrong?

The No Fail Cosby Sweater Equation

This pic was submitted by community member Knight_Rider_Rules as a total-take-back. Typically I would agree, but I know for a fact that this guy ended up with that girl. In my book that’s a definite no-take-back.

Cosby sweater engagement picture

Memorize this formula for lifelong happiness.

It also appears that this geek  unknowingly devised a rather simple formula by which all other geeks should live.

Cosby sweater + the promise of male-pattern baldness setting in at 28 years of age = hot chick and status elevation from Geek to One Lucky Bastard.

A total win win.
