Sharknado Week

I apologize to those who were looking forward to Throw-Back-Monday. I let you down. However, it was for a good reason! I was completely engrossed by Sharknado Week on the SyFy channel.

I don’t know what it is about SyFy lately, but they seem to be hitting their stride. They’ve given Wil Wheaton his own show. They’ve gotten creative with things like Heroes of Cosplay and Face Off. And now? Sharknado week. Classic.

I grew up with the B Movies filled with over-sized ants and red-eyed bunnies. I also watched ones like Leprechaun

Back in the day, low-budgets and a lack of technology defined the B-movie genre. Over-the-top storylines and notoriously bad acting made these films hokey and tough to swallow, but enjoyable nonetheless. Today’s B-movies, whether intentional or not, are different somehow. They still have over-the-top storylines, bad acting and cheap effects, but it’s on an entirely different level than it used to be.

Yesterday I watched Ghost Shark and then Mega Shark v Crocosaurus. Over the weekend I caught a bit of Mega Shark v. Mecha Shark, too. I saw actors like Elisabeth Rohm, Deborah Gibson, and Jaleel White giving their all to ridiculous dialogue and directorial cues. I saw jaw-dropping twists and turns. I laughed till I cried. They are crazy and out-there and so so bad, but they will make you smile. They will make you forget, at least for a short while, about the worries of your day.

I’m a huge proponent of wallowing in escapism. This week, I suggest you do the same. Escape with some cheesy shark flicks. Watch the highly anticipated Sharknado sequel. Sit back, relax, and enjoy a mind-numbing experience for a change.
